Project 3

I initially chose images that dealt with black hair care, however, I struggled trying to think about something that I could do. Looking at the examples shown, every person had things that pertained to nature. I recently had to go out of town, and in the car, I started to snap photos. So far, this is what I have with the photos I snapped. In the beginning I accidentally cropped and moved the lid of the cup and I immediately thought of a drink spill. I did not take the picture of the drink spill because I did not know how I could possibly do that, one because I do not know how to and two, it would have been super messy. I don't know what I want the outside of the car (looking out the window) to consist of just yet. I am still testing things out.

  1. I think for this project it's important to really consider what this project means to you because if you aren't happy about what you are making, you won't get as invested and motivated. I don't think you should completely let go of your black hair care images. I'm assuming you chose those for a reason.

As for your first iteration, I'm starting to think about what this could mean. The car seems like a contained space and the drink is something that wants to break away. Maybe you can go forward with this push and pull effect?

  2. The photo effect you have going on looks really good in this context. I think Yesenia is right about considering what this project means to you, especially in the context of cycles. Your original idea could definitely work but you may need to take a few more pictures or adjust where you want to take it.

  3. I agree as well. I really enjoyed your original concept and the possibilities it had. The fact that nobody else had that concept is exciting and really stands out in a good way. Don’t be afraid to do something completely different from everyone else! That being said, I’m sure whatever you decide to do will be interesting. This image is really visually appealing and I’m curious to see where you could take it.

  4. Hi Dejah!

I totally agree that you should sticking to something you like. Remember, the image you create does not have to necessarily look representational of your 'theme' you pick for the project. if you want to stick with your black hair care idea, you could maybe look at how the products are advertised and present them as if they where in an advertisement or even as something they are not. Personification of the items you chose maybe???? Try to think in an abstract way. Don't be afraid that you will make mistakes! Because mistakes are just happy accidents that turn into fun projects.

I also wanted to pitch the idea of incorporating the spilled drink image with your other images. How could the two correlate? How could you *make* the two ideas correlate?

Best of luck! I'm really excited to see what you come up with.

  5. I like what Yesenia said about you using the spilling drink as imagery of you breaking out of something. I think no matter what direction you decide to go in you could use this. Maybe that could be your new thing: the cycle of breaking cycles? I'm sure you'll do great and I really like the cup. I think you should take this further.

  6. If you are stuck, it could be helpful to think more abstractly. Instead of trying to represent your images literally, you could think of how their forms, colors, and values could be manipulated to create a pattern, or a different image entirely. I guess thinking of painting with your images, if that makes sense, or collaging digitally. I hope that helps!

  7. Hey, Dejah! This is a really cool image and I think you edited it really well. I did really enjoy the idea you had for your last concept, and I think there are more options to go with from there. I read in a previous comment that maybe there could be a way to combine the two?

  8. I think that the image is really interesting and well done, but I'm not sure if it "solves the problem" as Ed would say haha. I really liked your original idea from class about poc hair care, and I think you could maybe incorporate your hair 'routine' or 'cycle' and another more metaphorical cycle. You could literally show the steps for hair care, and mirror those with step for something else.
